This is a mix of studio head shots and street portraits. For my street shots, I have a few rules that I do my best to follow. A prime lens, for starters. Except for my photojournalism, I don't use zooms. My short primes keep me close to my subjects and force me to interact. I don't always record a name, but the rule is that I engage before I shott. And less a rule than a fact: no staging. The setting is wherever I meet people, in whatever light and backdrop the moment allows.
